As a result of World War II, Italy lost a quarter of its national wealth, 60% of its roads, 40% of its railways, and 20% of its support systems. In total, the country had been under Fascist rule for more than 20 years, so after the war ended, it needed to completely rebuild its economic system in addition to restoring its destroyed infrastructure. Like many other countries in Western Europe, the Marshall Plan was the first impetus for the country’s postwar recovery, and within five years of the war, Italy was able to restore its prewar production levels. In the 1950s, the country’s economic growth rate was the highest among European countries and amounted to 10% per year. Italy’s experience in developing territories is particularly interesting, as the country had a large imbalance in the level of prosperity between the south and the north of the country, which was exacerbated by the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
